First Impressions
Hotel Nes Amsterdam sits right on Kloveniersburgwal, one of those classic Amsterdam canal streets that feels properly Dutch without being touristy. I’ll be honest — from the outside, it’s understated in that way many three-star Amsterdam hotels are, but once you step inside, there’s this warm, boutique-ish vibe that immediately puts you at ease. The lobby’s compact but thoughtfully designed, and the staff genuinely seem to know their neighborhood well.
Location That Actually Works
Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re in Amsterdam City Centre, but on a quieter canal that doesn’t get the crowds of Damrak or those main tourist drags. The Red Light District is literally around the corner (which might matter to some people), but honestly, during the day this whole area just feels like authentic Amsterdam. You can walk to Central Station in about 8 minutes, and there’s this great brown café called Café de Engelbewaarder just down the street that locals actually frequent.
The Room Experience
My room was on the third floor — and yes, you’ll be climbing narrow Dutch stairs, so pack light if you can. The space itself was clean and functional, with that typical Amsterdam hotel reality of being smaller than you’d expect but somehow still comfortable. What I appreciated was the attention to details: good lighting for reading, a decent shower (not always a given in older Amsterdam buildings), and windows that actually opened properly. The beds are firm, which I know some people love and others don’t.
Neighborhood Insights
This part of the city center gives you the real Amsterdam experience without feeling like you’re staying in a theme park. There’s a Albert Heijn supermarket about three blocks away, and the Nieuwmarkt square — which has this fantastic Saturday market — is an easy five-minute walk. What you won’t find right outside your door are tons of restaurant options, but honestly, that just means you’ll explore more of the city instead of getting stuck in a tourist bubble.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
Look, Hotel Nes Amsterdam isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It’s a solid, well-run three-star place that understands its role perfectly — getting you settled in Amsterdam without breaking the bank or overwhelming you with unnecessary frills. The 8.2 rating makes sense because it delivers exactly what it promises: clean rooms, helpful staff, and a location that lets you experience Amsterdam like someone who actually lives here. For the price point in this part of the city, you’re getting genuine value rather than tourist markup.

Superb The front desk staff were excellent. They are the best thing about this hotel.
What could be improved: Room was very small

What could be improved: Rooms were tiny but adequate.
The breakfast was just ok.
Lovely hotel in fab location in central AMS Excellent location next to lots of lovely restaurants and shops. Great staff and very comfy beds. Also loved the shower!
What could be improved: No issues!
Amazing staff Really great location and clean facilities! The staff were extremely accommodating and so lovely! Especially Rick, he helped us with lots of recommendations and made our stay very special
What could be improved: The rooms are quite small so hard to open suitcases/ move around! But you get that in central locations
Perfect for a short stay in Amsterdam when you want to walk everywhere! Front desk staff were very helpful! We arrived early so they happily stored our luggage before check in, and offered us a choice of room (either a smaller room with a view, or slightly bigger room with no view) which was nice. Absolutely perfect location for first time visitors, felt very safe and could walk every where
What could be improved: The room was small (but that’s what you can expect in Amsterdam) and there wasn’t any AC in the room (but they did give us a fan which was great)
Great stay! Great location, very easy access to enjoy Amsterdam. Restaurants and cafes close by as well. Comfortable beds and clean rooms.
What could be improved: Quiet small but it is Amsterdam so that's to be expected. Maybe a bit expensive for a room. If you cannot handle small narrow stairs would not recommend.
Very good I enjoyed the friendly staff. The check in and check out was very easy to do online. My room was small but it was very clean. I wished I had had time to have breakfast that was offered but I had to head to the airport. I’d stay there again!
Superb Everything. You could choose between room beeing cleaned or not.
What could be improved: -
Good location with clean quality fittings. Good location on canals near shops & restaurants. Clean, quality fittings. Very helpful personable staff.
What could be improved: Room was rather squeezy and warm. Would prefer air con rather than a fan.
Superb Location
What could be improved: No ac
