First Impressions
Hotel Mai Amsterdam sits right on Geldersekade, and honestly, the location couldn’t be more perfect for getting that authentic Amsterdam vibe. The building itself has this understated elegance — it’s not trying too hard, which I actually appreciate. You’re literally steps away from the Red Light District without being right in the thick of the chaos, and Centraal Station is close enough that you can hear the distant hum of the city but far enough that it won’t keep you awake.
The Neighborhood
What I love about this spot in Amsterdam is that you’re surrounded by real local life. There’s a fantastic Indonesian restaurant just around the corner that most tourists never find, and the morning walk to Nieuwmarkt for coffee becomes part of your routine. The canals here aren’t as crowded as the main tourist strips, so you actually get those picture-perfect moments without fighting through crowds. You know what’s really nice? The little Albert Heijn supermarket is maybe two minutes away — those late-night snack runs are covered.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed, which seems to be the Amsterdam way. The windows are huge for a building this old, and if you’re lucky enough to get a canal view, well — you’ll spend way too much time just watching boats drift by. The four-star touches are there without being flashy: good linens, decent water pressure, and importantly, effective blackout curtains because those summer Amsterdam evenings stretch on forever.
Daily Rhythms
Breakfast happens in this cozy ground-floor space that feels more like someone’s well-appointed living room than a hotel dining area. The staff actually remembers your coffee preference after a couple days, which is a small thing but makes a difference when you’re trying to ease into Amsterdam time. There’s no spa or fancy wellness center, but honestly, with Vondelpark a pleasant walk away and the city’s bike culture calling, you don’t really miss it.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about Hotel Mai — it gets Amsterdam right. You’re not isolated in some sterile hotel bubble; you’re actually in the city. The 8.7 rating makes sense because it delivers on what matters: a comfortable base in a genuine neighborhood where you can live like a local for a few days. I mean, when your biggest decision is whether to grab stroopwafels from the corner shop or hunt down those legendary apple pancakes at Café de Reiger, you know you’ve chosen well. It’s the kind of place where you spend less time in the hotel and more time falling in love with the city, which is exactly how it should be.

What Our Guests Say
Very good What could be improved: Suggest more lights either more lamps that can be switched on. Lighting was very dim despite having the lighting on full power when pressing the light switch
Excellent location but overpriced Very good quality breakfast & choice. Superb location. Excellent decor & nice bathroom.
What could be improved: Very high price. No fridge, wardrobe or drawers in room. No milk sachets provided for tea/coffee.
Great. The location was great in the middle of De Wallen, very close to the Amsterdam Centraal train station. Room was spacious, clean and modern.
Superb Amazing large room with canal view. Beautiful hotel and staff were super helpful letting us check in early.
What could be improved: Nothing from me, my husband likes a harder bed.
Stylish, comfortable hotel. A great option for a short stay in Amsterdam Beautiful hotel in a central location
Exceptional Location
Just what I needed as I had a late arrival Location. Very close to station.
What could be improved: Dark corridors
Exceptional What could be improved: The price (for room and for the brakfast).
Booked it last minute and loved it Big rooms (especially for Amsterdam), well appointed and easy access to Centraal station. Close to the action but in a quiet part. Comfortable, big bed. Lovely staff too!
What could be improved: Nothing
Wonderful location, nice, helpful staff.room large and good for three adults Location, size of room and configuration of room. We had 3 adults and had a twin bed ( not a pull out) that had an 1/2 wall for some privacy for the 3 rd adult. Desk staff very helpful and polite.
What could be improved: Carpet in room looked old and had a slightly musty smell. Carpet need to to be replaced in the room.
