First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Estheréa along the Singel canal, you’ll notice it’s actually housed in a row of 17th-century Golden Age buildings — which honestly explains why the lobby feels more like stepping into someone’s elegant Amsterdam home than a typical hotel. The four-star property has this understated sophistication that immediately tells you the owners know what they’re doing, and the 9.2 rating makes perfect sense once you’re inside.
Location & Neighborhood
You’re right in the heart of Amsterdam City Centre on one of the city’s most iconic canals, but here’s what the guidebooks don’t tell you — this particular stretch of Singel is quieter than the tourist-heavy areas just a few blocks away. I mean, you can walk to Dam Square in about five minutes, but you’re not dealing with the constant noise and crowds. The flower market is practically next door, and there’s this great little brown café around the corner that locals actually use.
The Rooms
Each room feels different because, well, they are — these old canal houses don’t exactly lend themselves to cookie-cutter layouts. Some have canal views (worth requesting), others overlook the quiet courtyard, and the decor strikes this nice balance between respecting the building’s history and actually being comfortable for modern travelers. The bathrooms are surprisingly spacious for Amsterdam standards, and you know what? The beds are genuinely good, which isn’t something I can say about every historic hotel in the city.
Dining & Common Areas
The restaurant serves breakfast that goes well beyond the typical continental spread — they actually have proper Dutch cheeses and local specialties that change seasonally. There’s also this cozy bar area where guests tend to gather in the evenings, and it has that authentic Amsterdam café atmosphere without trying too hard. The staff here genuinely seems to enjoy talking about the city and will steer you toward places that aren’t overrun with tour groups.
Why Guests Love It
Honestly, it’s the combination of being genuinely central without feeling like you’re staying in a theme park version of Amsterdam. The building itself tells the story of the city — you’re literally sleeping in a piece of Golden Age architecture — but the service and amenities work for today’s travelers. Plus, the canal views from certain rooms, especially in the morning light, are exactly what you came to Amsterdam to see.

What could be improved: Desk staff was a little lacking in helpfulness. Bathroom was poorly lit.
The location, cleanliness, rooms, breakfast service, and especially the reception were all excellent. Every detail refle After an unpleasant experience at another hotel in the same area, I was truly relieved to find this one — and it exceeded every expectation.
The room was impeccably clean, the staff were attentive, professional, and genuinely kind.
Every detail, from the quality of the amenities to the food, reflected care and refinement.
It turned out to be exactly the kind of sophisticated travel experience I had been hoping for.🤍
What could be improved: There is absolutely nothing to complain about. As a hospitality professional myself, I can genuinely say this is a place where every detail is handled with care — a hotel where you’ll never face a single unpleasant moment. ✨
Beautiful hotel in excellent location. Gorgeous rooms! Lobby is lovely with many places to sit and read or have coffee/espresso - machines are available for guest use, with cookies. Location is perfect, on the canal and walking to everything. Staff are great.

A luxurious & fabulous stay in Amsterdam. Our flight got cancelled early evening and we were quickly able to book a room at the Estheréa - and what a treat it was! A friendly welcome from the reception staff, lovely bellboy taking us to our room, not to mention the beautiful room and bathroom. The bed was so comfy! It turned a flight disaster into a wonderful extra night in fabulous Amsterdam! Would 100% recommend!
What could be improved: Nothing, it was honestly faultless.
Great location and price. It was in a great location within easy walking distance to attractions. Inside the hotel was beautiful and elegant. Loved meeting the hotel cats.
