First Impressions
Hotel des Arts sits right on the Rokin, one of Amsterdam’s busiest shopping streets, and honestly, you can’t miss it. The building itself has this classic Dutch charm — tall, narrow windows and that typical Amsterdam architecture that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a postcard. I mean, you’re literally in the heart of Amsterdam City Centre here, with trams rumbling past and the energy of the city right at your doorstep.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re a two-minute walk from Dam Square, which sounds touristy but it’s actually perfect for orientation. The flower market is practically around the corner, and you can walk to the Rijksmuseum in about fifteen minutes if you don’t mind a pleasant stroll along the canals. The three-star rating might not scream fancy, but the location more than makes up for it. You’ve got the 4, 9, 16, and 24 trams all stopping nearby, so getting anywhere in the city is pretty straightforward.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact — and I mean Amsterdam-compact, so don’t expect to do cartwheels in there. But it was clean, well-designed, and had everything you actually need. The bed was comfortable enough, and the bathroom was modern, which honestly surprised me given the building’s age. There’s something charming about looking out those tall windows onto the busy street below, watching cyclists weave between pedestrians while you’re getting ready for the day.
Amenities & Practical Stuff
They’ve got a decent restaurant downstairs that serves both international and Dutch dishes — nothing groundbreaking, but the breakfast was solid and kept me going until lunch. The staff speaks excellent English (as most Dutch people do), and they’re genuinely helpful with directions and recommendations. What I appreciated most was how they handled the typical Amsterdam challenge of parking — they’ll point you to the nearest garage and explain the whole system, which can be confusing if you’re not familiar with the city.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Hotel des Arts isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It’s a well-run, comfortable place to stay in an absolutely prime location. You’re paying for that address, and it’s worth it if you want to be in the thick of things. The 8.5 rating makes sense — it delivers on what it promises without any pretense. You’ll spend most of your time exploring the city anyway, so having a clean, comfortable base right in the center is exactly what you need. Plus, there’s something authentic about staying on the Rokin that you just don’t get in the more touristy hotel districts.

What could be improved: Breakfast room crowded
Dutch treat! Location was excellent — character building, the rooms have vibe. Quintessentially Dutch.
What could be improved: No elevator. Narrow stairs to haul luggage. Not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.
This is a gem! The cozy atmosphere , charm and location was perfect. The cutoff were exceptional We loved the canal view room. Beautiful!
What could be improved: Nothing!
A beautiful stay in a quaint hotel with a stunning view of the canals in the heart of Amsterdam I loved the location … close to important sights but away from the crowds. My room ( canal facing) was spacious, beautifully designed and very comfortable. But the best thing was the very lovely staff at the hotel
What could be improved: Nothing really … maybe the serpentine staircases that are typical of Dutch buildings.
Exceptional Perfect location!
What could be improved: Lots of stairs , but manageable
Exceptional Cute hotel, well positioned, great room, very clean & good staff. No lift though, so not good if you're carrying a lot of luggage. Breakfast was pretty decent. You couldn't ask for more from a hotel of this star.
