First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Arena feels like stepping into Amsterdam’s creative soul. This four-star property sits in a converted 19th-century hospital complex — and honestly, they’ve done something pretty special with the bones of this historic building. The red brick facade and arched windows give it this grand, almost institutional charm that somehow works perfectly in the Oost district.
Location & Neighborhood
You’re in Amsterdam Oost here, which means you get the authentic local vibe without the tourist chaos of the city center. The Tropenmuseum is literally a five-minute walk away, and Park Oost — this lovely green space that most visitors never discover — is right around the corner. I actually prefer staying in this area because you can walk or bike to the center in about 15 minutes, but you’re sleeping somewhere that feels like real Amsterdam.
The Room Experience
The rooms maintain that historic character while being surprisingly modern where it counts. My room had these beautiful high ceilings and original architectural details, but the bed was comfortable and the WiFi actually worked well. The bathrooms are compact but thoughtfully designed — you know, European-style efficiency that somehow doesn’t feel cramped. Some rooms overlook the interior courtyard, which stays pretty quiet even on weekends.
Dining & Social Spaces
The restaurant downstairs, Park Café, serves decent food but it’s really more about the atmosphere. They’ve created this industrial-chic space in what used to be the hospital chapel — the soaring ceilings and original stonework make even a simple breakfast feel somewhat dramatic. The bar area gets lively in the evenings, drawing both guests and locals from the neighborhood, which I always think is a good sign.
Why Guests Love It
Hotel Arena works because it doesn’t try too hard to be something it’s not. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy working there, the building has real character and history, and the location puts you in an Amsterdam that feels authentic rather than performative. There’s parking available if you’re driving, though honestly, you won’t need a car once you’re settled in this part of the city. It’s the kind of place where you might extend your stay just because you’ve found your rhythm in the neighborhood.

What Our Guests Say
A unique large boutique hotel which offers a memorable experience Wonderful large boutique hotel in a fascinating building.
What could be improved: Towels too small for me. Bigger bath towel please.
Grand historic building at park's edge The location of the hotel is amazing--set in front of a beautiful park and close to loads of nice cafes and restaurants, easy to reach tourist areas but not close enough that you're affected by the noise. Our beds were comfortable and the room was quiet at night, even with the window open. The staff was super kind and helpful, and the terrace area was fantastic for a relaxing nightcap.
What could be improved: Our only complaint was that the bathroom seemed a bit of an afterthought--it was a glass box that basically vented straight out into the room and afforded little privacy. That being said, the water pressure and temperature were great!
It was nice The property itself was very nice
What could be improved: You could hear people walking / coming and going at night when you’re trying to sleep.
Very good Amazing park around the hotel, very beautiful building and decoration, lovely stay.
Very good The hotel is beautiful, the room was spotless, the bar fridge is stocked and there was complementary tea and coffee. The hotel opens out on to a beautiful garden and is right near the tram stops. I would stay here again.
What could be improved: The shower spills water out on to the bathroom floor and the bathroom door didn’t shut properly.
Expensive for no water supply Nice decor
What could be improved: Slow service at the restaurant and bar, we didn’t know there would be no water supply for 2 of the days we were staying.
Superb The staff gave first class service and made our stay most enjoyable.
What could be improved: The floors and corridors would benefit from having a greater level of sound insulation.
Good Beautiful hotel in a lovely park. Somewhat far away from the city centre, but with public transport it’s easy to access many interesting neighbourhoods in the city.
What could be improved: Some of the staff was lovely, but a few of the employees were a bit unhelpful. Also, they have lockers to store your baggage, which means you’ll have to lift your heavy suitcase up if the bottom row of lockers is occupied. There are not that many lockers, so there is a chance you won’t be able to store your baggage in a locker at all. The property is beautiful and situated well, so I’d still recommend it but definitely try to travel light.
Recomendo! Location is great, in the ooster park which was very nice and also walking distance from the tram to all locations in the city center. 10 minutes and we arrived to all locations we wanted. Also the vibes and atmosphere in the ground floor where the restaurant is located made the stay really fun, and the kind staff.
What could be improved: Our room was located in a floor where there has no elevator, so in case guests have a lot of luggage this can be a bit difficult. But overall was fine as we had only light luggage.
Great apart from the builder outside the window Looks amazing
What could be improved: I didn’t like being woken up in the morning by a man standing on scaffolding outside the window as I came down the stairs naked from the bedroom.
Perhaps a warning would have been useful. I understand works need to be done but that was not ok.
