First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Alexander on Vondelstraat, you immediately get the sense this is one of those places that locals actually know about. It’s a three-star property tucked into the Oud-West neighborhood, and honestly — the building has that classic Amsterdam charm without trying too hard. The entrance is understated, which I actually appreciate after seeing so many hotels that scream “tourist trap” from a block away. This hotel delivers genuine character and authenticity that resonates with discerning travelers.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what really surprised me about this place — the location is genuinely exceptional. You’re in Amsterdam’s Oud-West district, which means you can walk to Vondelpark in about three minutes, and the Museum Quarter is right there too. But you know what’s even better? You’re not stuck in the chaos of the city center. The Leidseplein area is close enough when you want nightlife, but far enough that you can actually sleep at night. Couples consistently rate this spot highly for its perfect balance of accessibility and tranquility.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed — typical Amsterdam style where every square meter counts. The beds are comfortable enough, and there’s decent storage space which honestly matters when you’re living out of a suitcase. What I liked most was how quiet it gets at night, especially considering you’re still in the heart of the city. The windows are well-insulated, and the neighborhood itself just settles down after evening hours. This creates an ideal sleeping environment for rest and rejuvenation.
Breakfast & Amenities
The breakfast setup is pretty solid — they do both continental and buffet options, so you’re covered whether you want something quick or you’re the type who needs a proper meal before exploring. The buffet has enough variety to keep you happy for several days, and the coffee is actually decent, which isn’t always a given at three-star places. The staff keeps everything well-stocked, and there’s usually space to sit even during busy morning hours. The dining area maintains a welcoming atmosphere throughout service.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t going to be the fanciest hotel you’ve ever stayed at, but it absolutely nails what matters most — location, comfort, and value. The fact that it consistently scores so high on location isn’t just marketing speak — you really can walk everywhere you want to go. Plus, there’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that feels more like a well-run neighborhood hotel than a corporate chain. The Oud-West area gives you that authentic Amsterdam vibe without the constant crowds, and Hotel Alexander sits right in the sweet spot of it all. It represents the best of what Amsterdam hospitality can offer.
Early hotels booking in Amsterdam secures light festival cruises, jazz club nights, and private cheese-tasting sessions.

What Our Guests Say
Prime location — close to many museums and easily accessible from the train station by tram. The staff are friendly, and Prime location
Friendly staff
What could be improved: Breakfast costs €17.5 but offers very limited food options.
I also booked the hotel’s taxi service to the airport, but the driver was extremely unprofessional — talking on his phone the entire time. Although the fixed price was agreed at €39.5, I was asked to pay extra because I paid by credit card. I would recommend just using Uber instead.
The hotel is a renovated 19th-century building, so it comes with some typical issues of older architecture — thin walls, poor sound insulation, and several stairs on each floor even though there’s an elevator.
Nice stay in a great location Great location, nice staff at check-in and out, comfy mattresses, lovely little balcony out back
What could be improved: Elevator only goes to 3rd floor, so having to carry luggage up and down the stairs to 4th floor was a chore; Room window open up to a wall 30 cm away with plenty of mosquitoes ready to enter as soon as you open the window; bathroom door jammed, minibar soaking wet in the inside. Guests in the room next door smoking set off the fire alarm in our room as well for multiple minutes.
Wonderful, But Could Be Improved The location is convenient, and the staff is attentive, genuinely kind, and helpful. Good room layout was nice and spacious enough for a family for four.
What could be improved: Our bedroom was downstairs, and always seemed a bit damp. I wish the air felt fresher. Unfortunately I did not want to open windows or doors because mosquitoes were already an issue, as our room was close to the door people use to go outside and smoke.
I will definitely come back. Great location, wonderful, friendly staff, cozy and stylish room, lovely atmosphere.
What could be improved: I did like the breakfast, but it wasn't my favourite. I would like fresh orange juice and fruit salad, also natural yoghourt - without sugar.
Superb Enjoyed our stay here. Great location as it is outside of the busy parts of Amsterdam central but close enough to walk in and to most spots. Also loved how close it was to the park. We spent time there every day.
What could be improved: The rooms are quite small and the walls are thin. To be expected in these older buildings but worth mentioning. Would be difficult to access some floor if you were not abled bodied. There is a lift but then we still had to walk up one more flight of stairs to access our room.
It’s good location, good value. Great location, staff members are extremely helpful and friendly.
What could be improved: Building is a bit dated.
Very good The location and the staff are helpful
What could be improved: The elevator wasn’t working and the room was tiny
Quintessential Amsterdam room. Quintessential European room. Small but clean and comfortable. Staff went above and beyond - making dinner reservations on our behalf at a local restaurant.
Easy to locate- close to bus and tram stop.
What could be improved: Elevator did not work. Small steep stairs.
Superb Lovely hotel. Clean room and very kind and helpful staff
What could be improved: No issues
amazing value free coffee and tea ! clean space, had board games at the reception. the location was absolutely perfect for us and the staff in the reception during daytime helped us with food places so thank you!
What could be improved: dont be too loud or else you'll get shouted at! understandable but LMAO
