First Impressions
Hotel Alexander sits on a lovely tree-lined street in Oud-West, and honestly, that’s part of its charm right there. The building itself has this classic Amsterdam character — you know, the kind of place that feels authentically Dutch without trying too hard. It’s a three-star property, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s basic. The lobby has this warm, welcoming vibe that immediately makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere with personality rather than just another cookie-cutter hotel.
The Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re in Amsterdam‘s Oud-West district, which means you get that local residential feel without being stuck in the middle of nowhere. Vondelpark is literally a few minutes’ walk away, and I mean, who doesn’t want to start their morning with a stroll through one of Europe’s most beautiful city parks? The Museumplein with all the major museums is close enough that you can easily walk there, but you’re far enough from the tourist chaos to actually get some sleep at night.
The Room Experience
The rooms at Hotel Alexander are what I’d call “thoughtfully simple.” Each room is clean and well-maintained, with comfortable beds that actually let you sleep well after a day of walking around the city. The bathrooms are compact but functional — this is Amsterdam, after all, where space is at a premium. What I appreciated most was the attention to detail: good lighting for reading, decent Wi-Fi that actually works, and windows that open properly so you can let in some fresh air.
Practical Touches
The staff here genuinely seems to care about making your stay work. They’re knowledgeable about the area and happy to point you toward good local spots that aren’t overrun with tourists. Breakfast is served in a bright, cheerful space, and while it’s not elaborate, it covers all the basics well — fresh bread, decent coffee, and enough variety to fuel your Amsterdam adventures. There’s also parking available, which anyone who’s tried to drive in Amsterdam will tell you is worth its weight in gold.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Hotel Alexander isn’t going to wow you with fancy amenities or over-the-top service, but that’s actually what makes it special. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re experiencing Amsterdam as locals do — staying in a real neighborhood, walking to genuine local cafés, and sleeping somewhere that feels more like a well-run guesthouse than a corporate hotel. The 8.1 rating makes perfect sense when you consider that this place delivers exactly what it promises: a comfortable, authentic Amsterdam experience without the inflated prices of the city center.
Early hotels booking in Amsterdam secures light festival cruises, jazz club nights, and private cheese-tasting sessions.

What Our Guests Say
Prime location — close to many museums and easily accessible from the train station by tram. The staff are friendly, and Prime location
Friendly staff
What could be improved: Breakfast costs €17.5 but offers very limited food options.
I also booked the hotel’s taxi service to the airport, but the driver was extremely unprofessional — talking on his phone the entire time. Although the fixed price was agreed at €39.5, I was asked to pay extra because I paid by credit card. I would recommend just using Uber instead.
The hotel is a renovated 19th-century building, so it comes with some typical issues of older architecture — thin walls, poor sound insulation, and several stairs on each floor even though there’s an elevator.
Nice stay in a great location Great location, nice staff at check-in and out, comfy mattresses, lovely little balcony out back
What could be improved: Elevator only goes to 3rd floor, so having to carry luggage up and down the stairs to 4th floor was a chore; Room window open up to a wall 30 cm away with plenty of mosquitoes ready to enter as soon as you open the window; bathroom door jammed, minibar soaking wet in the inside. Guests in the room next door smoking set off the fire alarm in our room as well for multiple minutes.
Wonderful, But Could Be Improved The location is convenient, and the staff is attentive, genuinely kind, and helpful. Good room layout was nice and spacious enough for a family for four.
What could be improved: Our bedroom was downstairs, and always seemed a bit damp. I wish the air felt fresher. Unfortunately I did not want to open windows or doors because mosquitoes were already an issue, as our room was close to the door people use to go outside and smoke.
I will definitely come back. Great location, wonderful, friendly staff, cozy and stylish room, lovely atmosphere.
What could be improved: I did like the breakfast, but it wasn't my favourite. I would like fresh orange juice and fruit salad, also natural yoghourt - without sugar.
Superb Enjoyed our stay here. Great location as it is outside of the busy parts of Amsterdam central but close enough to walk in and to most spots. Also loved how close it was to the park. We spent time there every day.
What could be improved: The rooms are quite small and the walls are thin. To be expected in these older buildings but worth mentioning. Would be difficult to access some floor if you were not abled bodied. There is a lift but then we still had to walk up one more flight of stairs to access our room.
It’s good location, good value. Great location, staff members are extremely helpful and friendly.
What could be improved: Building is a bit dated.
Very good The location and the staff are helpful
What could be improved: The elevator wasn’t working and the room was tiny
Quintessential Amsterdam room. Quintessential European room. Small but clean and comfortable. Staff went above and beyond - making dinner reservations on our behalf at a local restaurant.
Easy to locate- close to bus and tram stop.
What could be improved: Elevator did not work. Small steep stairs.
Superb Lovely hotel. Clean room and very kind and helpful staff
What could be improved: No issues
amazing value free coffee and tea ! clean space, had board games at the reception. the location was absolutely perfect for us and the staff in the reception during daytime helped us with food places so thank you!
What could be improved: dont be too loud or else you'll get shouted at! understandable but LMAO
