First Impressions
Walking into the Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam – City Hall by IHG, you immediately notice how they’ve managed to squeeze modern comfort into what feels like classic Amsterdam architecture. The lobby isn’t huge — honestly, it’s pretty compact — but there’s something refreshing about a hotel that doesn’t try to overwhelm you with unnecessary grandeur. This three-star property knows exactly what it is, and that confidence shows from the moment you step inside.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re literally in Amsterdam City Centre, but on Valkenburgerstraat, which means you get that authentic neighborhood feel without being stuck in tourist chaos. The Jewish Quarter is right at your doorstep, and I mean that literally. You can walk to the Portuguese Synagogue in about three minutes, and the whole area has this wonderful mix of history and everyday Amsterdam life. What’s brilliant is that you’re close enough to everything major (Dam Square, the Red Light District, Central Station) but far enough away that you actually get some peace at night.
The Room Experience
The room setup is exactly what you’d expect from Holiday Inn Express — clean, functional, and surprisingly comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised by how much natural light comes through the windows, which isn’t always a given in Amsterdam’s narrow buildings. The beds are proper comfortable (not just hotel-marketing comfortable), and there’s enough space to actually open your suitcase without performing gymnastics. You know what really impressed me? The shower pressure — it’s actually decent, which anyone who’s stayed in older Amsterdam hotels will appreciate.
Breakfast & Practical Matters
The breakfast situation here is honestly better than it needs to be for a three-star place. They do a proper buffet with both continental and full English options, and the coffee is actually drinkable — I mean, it’s not going to compete with the café around the corner, but it’ll definitely wake you up. The breakfast area gets busy around 8:30, so if you’re an early riser, you’ll have the place mostly to yourself. There’s no on-site parking, but that’s pretty standard for central Amsterdam — you’re better off using public transport anyway.
Why Guests Love It
What really makes this place work is that it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. Couples seem to particularly appreciate the location (and honestly, I get why — it’s romantic walking through this part of the city at night), but it works just as well for solo travelers or business trips. The staff actually knows the neighborhood and can point you toward the good local spots, not just the obvious tourist attractions. You’re paying for a solid, comfortable base in an excellent location, and that’s exactly what you get — no more, no less, and sometimes that’s perfect.
Exploring Amsterdam blends gabled houses, world-class museums, and vibrant neighborhoods glowing with canal lights.

I would return there. It had everything you needed Friendly staff, good breakfast and near enough to city centre. We had a room level with the canal.
What could be improved: Shower leaked through door when turned on full. The rain on the metal windowsill kept us awake 1 night.

This is a highly recommended hotel for those who value a clean, safe, and comfortable stay with excellent service, and d Pros
* Location & Safety: The hotel is in a very good location, just outside the city center, which allows for easy walking to many of the main attractions. The neighborhood is also a major plus, as it feels quiet and secure, with a police station located directly across the street.
* Staff & Cleanliness: The staff members are incredibly friendly and helpful, and their service makes you feel very welcome. The hotel itself is also very clean and has a modern feel.
* Breakfast: The breakfast is simple, but it’s fresh and complete, offering all the essentials to get your day started.
What could be improved: Cons
* Transportation: While the location is great for exploring on foot, there are very few public transport options nearby. If you don't enjoy walking long distances, this could be a challenge.
* Breakfast Variety: If you're expecting a large breakfast buffet with many different options, you may find the selection a bit basic.
Good experience overall Well located, modern, beautiful canal view
What could be improved: Shower cabin leaking water on bathroom’s floor. Small breakfast area, crowded.
Very good Clean and modern hotel. The staff is friendly and helpful. We especially thank Mrs Burcu, she is successful in solving problems, solution oriented, very professional. They are very lucky to have the staff that every business should have.
Very good What could be improved: First night room was looking directly into someone else's room which we didn't like. Staff excellent moved us to different room very pleased with service.
