First Impressions
Walking up to 1637: Historic Canal View Suites on Herengracht feels like stepping into a postcard — except you’re actually about to stay inside it. This four-star gem sits right on one of Amsterdam‘s most elegant canals, and honestly, the building itself tells the story before you even check in. The 17th-century facade has that perfectly weathered charm that makes you wonder about all the people who’ve walked through these doors over the centuries.
The Suites
Each apartment here feels more like borrowing a friend’s incredibly stylish canal house than staying in a typical hotel. The suites blend period details — think original wooden beams and tall windows — with modern touches that actually work. You know what I loved? The way they’ve kept the historical character without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a museum. The kitchen setups are proper too, not those tiny hotel kitchenettes that can barely handle making coffee.
That Canal View
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places that promise “canal views,” but this is the real deal. From most suites, you’re looking straight out onto Herengracht with those classic Amsterdam houses lined up like they’re posing for you. Morning coffee by those tall windows while watching bikes cruise by below — it’s sort of perfect, actually. The tree-lined canal gets this gorgeous light in the late afternoon that makes you understand why Amsterdam has inspired so many artists.
Location & Getting Around
Herengracht 359 puts you right in the heart of the canal ring, which means you’re walking distance to pretty much everything that matters. The Anne Frank House is maybe ten minutes on foot, and you can easily wander to the Jordaan neighborhood for dinner or hit the museum quarter without dealing with public transport. I mean, the trams are great here, but when you’re staying somewhere this central, you barely need them.
Why Guests Love It
That 9.4 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve stayed here. It’s the kind of place where the location, the historical atmosphere, and the modern comfort actually complement each other instead of competing. You get the authentic Amsterdam canal house experience without sacrificing the amenities you want when you’re traveling. Plus, there’s something special about telling people you stayed in a building from 1637 — the history just adds this extra layer to the whole Amsterdam experience that chain hotels can’t touch.
Exploring Amsterdam blends gabled houses, world-class museums, and vibrant neighborhoods glowing with canal lights.

Get wonderfully lost by your hotel Location, location, location.
We were absorbed in the immediate surroundings of our hotel during our stay here in Amsterdam. Who wants to leave when you can wander around here and get wonderfully lost?
This area, De 9 Straatjes, is tucked into Amsterdam’s UNESCO-listed canal belt, a charming maze of nine cobbled streets brimming with over 250 boutiques, vintage shops, cozy cafés, and canal-side treasures. It’s the perfect place to be lost with abandon.
What could be improved: We didn't have anything to complain about except for some trivial inconveniences. Probably would be better if we had some more towel hooks in the bathroom.
Cozy and aesthetic stay in a poppin but peaceful area of Amsterdam, my local friends were telling me how lucky I was to Beautiful property and the hosts were complete sweeties! Location is fantastic and everyone at 1637 is so friendly and kind.
What could be improved: Nothing
Wonderful Birthday Stay! I had everything I needed for my stay. There were so many things close by to walk to and it was easy to hop on a train to get to further places. My hosts were amazing! I had a couple special requests and they were so helpful in helping me with them. My birthday trip a wonderful experience! I highly recommend them and would stay again. Thank you Joost, Chet, and Anna!
What could be improved: First floor so make sure you have curtains pulled if you’re changing. (Haha!)
Great place with excellent location! Very roomy, comfortable, clean, great view of the canal, location 👌
The gentleman who met us was very friendly and helpful.
What could be improved: Can be noisy at night with people walking past, but not a deal breaker.
About a 4 out of 5 Great location and being on canal near a bridge.
What could be improved: The room did not look like the pictures
Enjoyed the view of the canal. There was no breakfast provided.
Exceptional The location is one of the highlights of the property. You’re in the heart of Amsterdam without the annoyance of being in a busier location. You feel more like a local and at home, than on vacation.
