First Impressions

The Historic Canal House Apartment sits right on Marnixstraat, and honestly, you can’t miss the classic Amsterdam canal house facade — it’s exactly what you picture when you think of the city. This three-star place isn’t trying to be something it’s not, which I actually appreciate. You’re staying in a genuine piece of Amsterdam history, complete with those steep, narrow stairs that’ll give your legs a workout.

Location & Neighborhood

The location is pretty solid — you’re in Amsterdam City Centre, but on a street that feels more residential than touristy. I mean, you’ve got the Jordaan neighborhood practically next door, which locals will tell you is where the real Amsterdam vibe lives. The Anne Frank House is about a ten-minute walk, and you can easily stroll to the main canal ring without dealing with the crazy crowds around Dam Square. There’s a decent Albert Heijn supermarket nearby too, which comes in handy.

The Apartment Experience

This is where things get interesting — you’re not getting a traditional hotel room here. The apartment setup means you have your own space, and there’s actually a kitchen where you can make coffee without paying hotel prices. The rooms have that authentic canal house feel, with original details that remind you this building has stories to tell. Sure, the ceilings are lower than you might expect, but that’s part of the historic charm.

What Works (And What Doesn’t)

Look, with a 7.1 rating, this place has its quirks — and I think that’s worth mentioning upfront. The stairs are steep (typical for these old buildings), and the space feels authentically Amsterdam-sized, which means compact. But you know what? The character makes up for a lot. You’re staying in a real canal house, not some modern chain hotel that could be anywhere in the world. The apartment-style setup gives you flexibility that regular hotels don’t offer.

Why Guests Keep Coming Back

There’s something honest about this place that I respect. It’s not pretending to be fancy, but it delivers on the Amsterdam experience people actually want — staying in a historic building, being close to everything that matters, and having your own space to decompress after walking the canals all day. The neighborhood feels lived-in rather than tourist-trap artificial, and honestly, that’s harder to find in Amsterdam than you might think. If you want authentic over polished, this canal house apartment gets it right.

Very poor Hello
Thank you for your concern, thank you for the wine.
Upon arrival, we found garbage that had not been thrown away, we booked an apartment for four, kitchen utensils were missing, the frying pan on your hob does not work. The bedding in the rooms is clean, but there is a lack of tidiness.
We were also disappointed that you did not inform us that there was repair work going on in the street, it is not possible to drive there, there is noise in the morning.
I think I did not offend you, I hope you will pay attention to our comments.
Good day

Good location but building works and roadworks plus strangers living downstairs made it not so ideal Location was good.

What could be improved: Roadworks made it very hars to get to. People living downstairs made bad smelling food. Apartment smelled like fish when we arrived.

Exceptional Had everything you could need for a stay in Amsterdam

What could be improved: The handle on the shower room kept falling off. Really needs to be fixed

Comfortable apartment in an excellent location. The location of the apartment was ideal for us -- easy walking distance to both the city center and to the museum quarter. The apartment was very comfortable though a bit Spartan in the furnishings.

What could be improved: The kitchen needs better lighting. In particular, the cooking area is not well-illuminated. Would also suggest providing a set of instructions for the appliances (stove, dishwasher) and the room temperature controls (we found the electronic control panel impossible to figure out, though fortunately we didn't need it).

Pleasant What could be improved: Sheets were not clean. They did not clean it between customers. Someone had clearly slept in the bed before we arrived.

Great value for money! The apartment was presented exactly like on the website. Keys were easily retrieved through the key box and instructions were promptly sent through email before arrival. The host had left subtle extras like water in the fridge, chocolate and waffles which was a lovely added touch.

What could be improved: There was some slight disturbance from neighbours which did wake us throughout the night.

Enjoyable It was a great location and reasonably priced

What could be improved: There were a few things need fixing in the property to make it more convenient. It does not have free to air TV access so not good if relying on seeing a major event.
