First Impressions
Walking up to Het Kabinet on Tweede Jan Steenstraat, you’d honestly miss it if you weren’t looking carefully. It’s tucked into this quiet residential street in Amsterdam South, and the entrance is so understated that it feels more like you’re visiting a friend’s incredibly stylish home than checking into a four-star hotel. The building itself has that classic Amsterdam charm — tall, narrow, with those distinctive large windows that let in floods of natural light.
The Neighborhood Feel
What I love about this location is how genuinely local it feels. You’re in De Pijp, which means you’re surrounded by the kind of cafés and shops that actual Amsterdammers frequent, not just tourists. The Heineken Experience is a short walk if that’s your thing, but honestly, I spent more time wandering the Albert Cuyp Market just soaking up the neighborhood vibe. It’s about a 10-minute bike ride to the city center — and yes, they have bikes you can borrow, because this is Amsterdam after all.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was small but incredibly well thought out, which seems to be Het Kabinet’s whole philosophy. Everything has its place, and every detail feels intentional — from the custom-built furniture to the way they’ve maximized storage without making the space feel cramped. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious for Amsterdam standards, with this gorgeous rain shower that I may have spent too much time enjoying. The bed was firm in that European way that somehow always leads to the best sleep.
Daily Rhythms
Breakfast happens in this cozy common area that doubles as a lounge, and it’s the kind of spread that makes you want to linger over coffee. Nothing fancy, but everything is clearly sourced with care — proper Dutch cheeses, fresh bread, good jam. What struck me was how the staff seemed to genuinely remember guests and their preferences after just a day or two. There’s no restaurant on-site, but honestly, you’re in one of Amsterdam’s best food neighborhoods, so why would you want to eat in your hotel?
Why Guests Love It
Het Kabinet works because it doesn’t try too hard. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’ve discovered something special that not everyone knows about yet. The 9.7 rating makes perfect sense when you experience the attention to detail — from the way they handle your luggage (there’s no lift, but they never make it feel like an inconvenience) to the local recommendations that go beyond the obvious tourist spots. It’s boutique hospitality done right, where being small means being personal rather than limited.
