First Impressions
Walking up to Guesthouse Prinsencanal 1 on Korte Prinsengracht, you’ll immediately understand why this spot gets such rave reviews. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the Anne Frank House and the Jordaan district — it doesn’t get much more central than this in Amsterdam. The building itself has that classic canal house charm, though honestly, what really struck me was how quiet it felt despite being in the absolute heart of everything.
Location & Neighborhood
This four-star guesthouse sits in what locals consider the real Amsterdam — not the touristy bits, but where the city actually breathes. You can walk to Dam Square in about five minutes, but turn the other direction and you’re wandering through the Jordaan’s narrow streets with their cozy brown cafés and vintage shops. The Prinsengracht canal is right there, and I actually spent quite a bit of time just watching the boats drift by. What’s brilliant is that couples seem to absolutely love this area — they’ve rated the location 9.3, which honestly makes perfect sense when you experience it yourself.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed — you know how Amsterdam properties can be tiny, but this felt efficiently spacious rather than cramped. The windows looked out onto the canal, and there’s something really special about waking up to that view. The decor strikes a nice balance between modern comfort and respecting the building’s historic character. I appreciated the attention to detail — good lighting, proper storage space, and a bathroom that actually works well despite the old building constraints.
Getting Around & Practical Matters
Here’s what I wish someone had told me before arriving — parking in this area is basically impossible, so if you’re driving, plan accordingly. But honestly, you won’t need a car anyway. Tram stops are everywhere, and most of what you’ll want to see is walkable. The Central Station is about a 10-minute walk, which makes day trips super easy. I found myself using the location as a perfect base for exploring different neighborhoods — Jordaan for dinner, the museum quarter for culture, and the Red Light District when curiosity struck.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is that perfect sweet spot between location and value. You’re paying for that incredible 9.3 location score, but you’re not getting gouged like you would at some of the bigger hotels nearby. The staff genuinely knows the area and can point you toward the good local spots — not just the obvious tourist traps. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying in Amsterdam rather than just visiting it, if that makes sense. For couples especially, there’s something romantic about having your own little canal-side retreat while still being able to stumble home easily after exploring the city’s famous nightlife.

What Our Guests Say
Nice place within walking distance of many things Quiet, walkable, good price for downtown, nice host
What could be improved: Bit small, but come on. It's Amsterdam. Everything is small
A super pleasant stay beyond expectations It was first to impress that this is local family homestay business, you are welcomed warmly and check-in process in person with all details and clear instructions, of course not without a common customer care - "if you need anything, please do not hesitate to contact me"
Given the limit space with all the amenities in the room but it is actually what you just need. The cleanliness is of another impression with my "wow" of which you can tell how well the accomodation being cleaned and taken care of.
There was a snap cold in Amsterdam that week when we stayed and unfortunately my partner immune system is vulnerable enough to catch a flu. I was quite struggle to find way to take care of him in such new place as our first visit to Amsterdam, eg. a nearby pharmacy, short walk distance to convenient stores and local restaurants for food, a frequent and easy adjustable room temperature for the fever, hot herbal tea on the table and lot of tissues needed (running nose), the hygiene of the facility, all to accomodate an ill person in unexpected circumstance but everything was just achievable so it is incredibly accommodating and convenient. My partner had got well after 1.5 days and we pleasantly continue our trip to rest of Europe
The location is also another plus as it is a corner property with multiple directions, 5 mins walk to local buses, the water way just at front door, local stores and restaurants and many bakeries right to the next street, quite and safe neighbourhood in renown Jordaan district.
There is no reason for us not to stay here when next visit to Amsterdam. Our host Carlos and Christian are super host.
What could be improved: A bit narrow of stair way which require extra caution but this is not a negative point to me. We were assisted with the luggages by the host and it is easy to get used to.
Fine for 2 nights. I wouldn’t have wanted to stay for any longer. It was very central. It was spotlessly clean. The bed was excellent. The host was extremely helpful and allowed us to leave our bags before we went to catch our flight.
What could be improved: We had the basement apartment and it was very small. The wardrobe only had a waist high rail, so it was impossible to hang any dresses or longer garments. The bathroom was absolutely tiny, so everything got soaked when taking a shower. The cups were tiny so not suitable for a cup of tea - and only 2 tea breakfast tea bags were provided for our 2 night stay. Most importantly, the photos on the website do not pertain to that canal or the view from the apartment. The apartment is actually next to a flyover and I have included a photo of the view. It wasn’t noisy but it wasn’t attractive as the photos on the website lead you to believe which is highly misleading and very disappointing!
ABFB Excellent accommodation for a solo traveller, in the heart of Amsterdam, close to...EVERYTHING and transport links, Centraal Station, from which you can go EVERYWHERE, in any direction you want.
I personally chose to experience the less touristy Amsterdam North, which offers a different atmosphere and innovative museums (STRAAT, Moco, Nxt, Eye Film institute...). Catch the free ferry from centraal station in the direction of NDSM and experience a different Amsterdam.
Impeccably tidy room, bed, hot shower and last but not least, wonderful host. 🙂
Thank you Carlos!
What could be improved: No such thing
Good value for accommodations in a beautiful area of Amsterdam. Nice accommodations in a very expensive area. Good value. We knew up front that this was a rooming house, as opposed to another property that passed itself off as a hotel.
Exceptional Beautiful room in an excellent location, would highly recommend to anyone.
Very good Clean and welcoming. Bed is particularly comfy and 4 pillows.
All attractions are walkable from this apartment. Great find.
What could be improved: Windows don’t open and no AC
Exceptional Carlos was very helpful and always there when you needed him. After we checked out, we asked if we could place our luggage in the hostel for a final stroll around amsterdam, and he was so kind and was there when we came to pick it up. Absolutely would like to come and stay here again.
Exceptional The place was exceptionally clean and cozy. Special thanks to Carlos for going above and beyond to make our stay wonderful and welcoming!
Perfect place to stay for a few nights in Amsterdam. Location is perfect, 10 minute walk from Central Station in a nice neighbourhood which is very quiet at night. The owners very friendly and cleaned the apartment after a couple of days with new bedding and towels.
