First Impressions
Walking up to GH Amsterdam on Valckenierstraat, you’ll notice it doesn’t scream for attention like some hotels do. It’s tucked into this narrow street in the heart of Amsterdam City Centre, and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it work. The building has that classic Amsterdam canal house feel — you know, tall and narrow with those big windows that let in all the light. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the canals, which is pretty much what everyone comes to Amsterdam to see anyway.
The Neighborhood Experience
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re in the thick of things without being on one of those crazy tourist strips where you can’t move. Valckenierstraat is this quiet side street, but walk two minutes in any direction and you hit the main canals, the shopping areas, or some of the best brown cafés in the city. The Bloemenmarkt is practically around the corner, and if you’re into that whole Red Light District scene, it’s close enough to explore but far enough that you’re not dealing with the noise all night.
The Room
The room I stayed in was compact — and I mean Amsterdam compact, so don’t expect American-sized spaces. But they’ve done something smart with the design that makes it feel bigger than it actually is. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom modern enough, and those big windows I mentioned? They actually open, which is great because not all Amsterdam hotels have proper air conditioning. There’s a small desk area if you need to get work done, and the WiFi actually works well throughout the building.
Daily Rhythms
Breakfast happens in this cozy ground-floor space that feels more like a neighborhood café than a hotel dining area. It’s nothing fancy — continental style with decent coffee and fresh bread — but it gets the job done. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know the area inside and out. They gave me solid recommendations for restaurant spots that weren’t just the obvious tourist traps, and their suggestions for getting around the city were spot-on.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this four-star place isn’t trying to be the fanciest hotel in Amsterdam, and that’s actually its strength. The 8.2 rating makes sense because it delivers on what matters most — a clean, comfortable base in an excellent location with staff who know their stuff. You’re paying for the location and the experience of staying in a real Amsterdam neighborhood, not for a massive lobby or a rooftop bar. If you want to feel like you’re actually in the city rather than just visiting it, GH Amsterdam gets that balance right.
Best hotels in Amsterdam blend canal-view balconies, design interiors, and farm-to-table breakfast spreads.

What Our Guests Say
Great accommodation for 3 days in Amsterdam. We had a great stay at GH Amsterdam. Great location and very comfortable accommodation. Richard (the owner) was on hand if we needed anything and couldn’t ask for more.
Superb All communication with our host, Rich was fabulous. The apartment was really comfortable and plenty of amenities for our 4 night stay. close to restaurants, supermarket and public transport. Thanks Rich for providing a great apartment, we loved our stay in Amsterdam
Great stay, good apartment Good location, a nice quiet street, spacious enough for the 3 of us.
Great shower.
Nice and private.
It's around a 30-minute walk into the center but we didn't mind walking every day as we like to explore.
Rich was very helpful and nice.
What could be improved: We believed breakfast was included but it wasn't, Rich did kindly provide some yogurt and berries which wasn't suitable for us (two people don't have dairy) so we just went to a nearby location for breakfast. This was the only disappointing aspect everything else was great.
Happy to return back Our stay offered convenient access to central Amsterdam, just 2-3 stops away. We received a very warm welcome upon arrival, and I would highly recommend this accommodation to others.

What could be improved: We e were satisfied with the facilities and had no issues to mention. Were quite happy with what was already there.
Superb This property had everything we could have wished for, it was clean, comfortable and with plenty of space to spread out.
Rich was very helpful in pointing things out to us, making life easier.
What could be improved: Nothing
Much recommended Very convenient location. If you have kids this the best place. It has a direct connection to everywhere in Amsterdam. Metro is located just at the door step. There is a cafe next door which serves drinks and food.
AH supermarket is nearby.
What could be improved: Washing machine wasn’t working at the moment. Apart from that we had a very comfortable stay.
Thank you ! Great location and very
Comfy.
What could be improved: I just wished the washer/dryer worked . It was out of order at the time of my stay .
Great location. Recommended for two people, not three. You may need eye shades to sleep in the summer. It was in a great location near the university, metro and trams.
What could be improved: There no blackout curtains which was a problem for us after travelling directly from Australia. It was unseasonably hot and there was little ventilation although there was a fan.
Richard was very helpful ahead of arriving and giving advice on good spots to go! very central and modern place. was perfect for us but in fairness we didn’t spend a huge amount of time in the property as we were out all day and most of the night!
What could be improved: nothing
Very good location is great! It is walking distance to city centre and 10 min to zoo :) it is very quite even though the traffic street is nearby. No stairs - easy to use baby trolley. clean an comfortable. very friendly and helpful owner
