First Impressions
Walking up to Generator Amsterdam on Mauritskade, you’ll immediately notice this isn’t your typical hostel-turned-hotel. The building has this industrial-chic vibe that actually works — think exposed brick and contemporary touches without trying too hard. It’s located in the Oost district, which honestly feels more authentic than the tourist-heavy center, and you’re still just a short tram ride from all the main attractions.
The Neighborhood
What I love about this spot in Amsterdam is that you’re genuinely in a residential area where locals actually live and work. The Mauritskade runs along one of the city’s lesser-known canals, so you get that classic Amsterdam canal experience without the crowds of camera-wielding tourists. There’s a decent coffee shop (the actual coffee kind) just around the corner, and the Oosterpark is literally a five-minute walk — perfect for morning jogs or just escaping the city buzz.
The Room Experience
The rooms are what you’d expect from a three-star property, but they’ve done something smart here. Instead of cramming everything into a tiny space, they’ve kept things minimal and functional. My room had a comfortable bed, decent storage, and — this matters more than you’d think — actually worked well for getting ready in the morning without bumping into everything. The bathrooms are compact but well-designed, with good water pressure that’ll wake you up properly.
Social Spaces and Dining
The common areas are where Generator really shines, honestly. The lobby doubles as a co-working space during the day, and there’s usually a good mix of business travelers and tourists who aren’t afraid to venture beyond the Red Light District. The on-site restaurant serves solid international food — nothing groundbreaking, but well-executed and reasonably priced. I mean, you’re not coming here for a Michelin-starred experience, but you won’t leave hungry or disappointed.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about Generator Amsterdam — it knows exactly what it is and doesn’t pretend otherwise. You’re getting clean, modern accommodations in a genuinely local neighborhood, with staff who actually seem to enjoy their jobs. The tram connections are excellent (line 14 stops practically at the door), and you’re close enough to everything important without being in the thick of tourist chaos. It’s particularly great if you’re someone who wants to experience Amsterdam like you actually live here, rather than just hitting the greatest hits and calling it a trip.
Hotels in Amsterdam line historic canals, museum quarters, and buzzing neighborhoods filled with cozy cafés.

What Our Guests Say
Very good Good facilities, basic rooms but clean.
What could be improved: Decent walk from the centre, plenty of trams though
it is convenient and easy to check in and out. it is located a tram station that connects to the rest of the city. really convenient
What could be improved: there isnt much common space outside. you need to buy food from the cafe to stay there
Superb The location of the hostel is in the middle of a park, so it's very quiet. It used to be the old university of Amsterdam therefore it is very spacious to mingle with other people. The building looks very well maintained in its old fashioned.
What could be improved: Everything was good. Maybe the triple bunk bed is a bit high to reach the top bed
Very good Clean rooms and great location
The staff were friendly, everything was clean, and the location was perfect – just 30 minutes’ walk Everything was wonderful – the staff were very friendly, the place was clean, and the location couldn’t be better. It’s only a 30-minute walk to the city center, which was super convenient. For this price, the quality is really impressive!
What could be improved: The only downside was the neighbors upstairs. They kept jumping off their bunk bed and dropping things (I think it was a phone) all night long. It was really noisy and made it hard to sleep.
Overall, apart from this, my stay was excellent!
Nice, clean stay It is next to a park and looks very nice in the reception area
What could be improved: none
Good hostel but don't rent bikes from them Good location and good amenities in the hostel
What could be improved: The outlets and lights of the bed did not work. We also rented bikes and one of the bike key was bent when given to us, it then broke during use during our rental, and we were charged to replace the key.
Excellent Value for money Affordable, convenient, clean.
A clean and comfortable hostel We were a group of 6 on a city trip. We had a dormitory for ourselves. The beds were very comfortable and the room was very clean. The price was very reasonable for the quality.
What could be improved: Towels were not included
Just nice, clean and modern place. Clean, excellent location.
What could be improved: Lockers inside room are with metal parts which sound disgusting when opened. Had neighbour who woke up at 7 am, and it was impossible to sleep.
