First Impressions
Walking up to France Hotel on Oudezijds Kolk, you’ll notice it sits right in the thick of Amsterdam‘s historic center β and I mean right in it. The building has that classic Dutch canal house feel, though honestly, it’s not trying to be anything fancy. This three-star spot keeps things straightforward, which actually works in its favor since you’re paying for the location more than anything else.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s the thing about this street β you’re literally a two-minute walk from Centraal Station, which sounds touristy but is incredibly practical. I’ve stayed here twice, and both times I appreciated being able to dump my bags and immediately explore without figuring out trams or bikes. The Red Light District is right around the corner (whether that’s a plus or minus depends on you), but you’re also steps from some genuine local cafΓ©s that most tourists miss completely.
The Room Experience
The room I had was compact β well, tiny if we’re being honest β but it had everything I needed for a few nights in the city. The bed was comfortable enough, and there’s a small desk if you need to catch up on emails. Don’t expect luxury here; the decor is pretty basic, but the windows open onto the canal, and hearing the water at night actually helps you sleep despite being in such a busy area.
Practical Details
The staff runs a tight ship here, though they’re not overly chatty β very Dutch, you know what I mean. Check-in was quick, and they gave me solid recommendations for dinner spots that weren’t tourist traps. There’s no restaurant on-site, but honestly, with Amsterdam’s food scene right outside your door, that’s not really a problem. The WiFi worked fine, and the shower had decent water pressure, which matters more than you’d think after walking around the city all day.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
Look, France Hotel isn’t going to blow your mind with amenities or design, but it nails the essentials. You get a clean, safe place to sleep in one of Amsterdam’s most central locations without paying five-star prices. I’ve recommended it to friends who wanted to experience the city’s energy without being stuck in some generic chain hotel in the suburbs. The 7.3 rating makes sense β it’s solid, reliable, and gets the job done while keeping you right where the action is.
Hotels near me in Amsterdam deliver easy walks to Vondelpark, Rijksmuseum, and charming bridge-lined waterways.

What Our Guests Say
Very good location but very small rooms Amazing location, friendly staff, but very small rooms.
Great location Great location very near central station and a short walk to the Damrak and Dam square
Great location; very comfortable beds Great location!
What could be improved: Pub right downstairs with noisy customers outside but that's to be expected with people drinking
Very good The location was great. The rooms were very nice and comfy. Overall, we had a good experience.
What could be improved: We did not get check-in instructions on the day of check-in. So after getting at the hotel, I had to call them to get the instructions.
Great location.. absolutely recommended at the right price! Superb location.. 5 min walking distance from central station and at the hearth of De Walden district.. you can easily get the tram to reach the Museums district.. nice and helpful guys at the reception!
What could be improved: Room was a bit small (I had a single room) and price a bit too expensive!
