First Impressions
The moment you step into Décor Canal House, you realize this isn’t just another four-star hotel — it’s something much more intimate. Located right on Prinsengracht, one of Amsterdam’s most picturesque canals, this place feels like staying in a beautifully curated private home rather than a typical tourist accommodation. The building itself dates back to the 17th century, and honestly, they’ve done an incredible job preserving that historic canal house charm while making everything feel fresh and contemporary.
The Location Sweet Spot
You know what I love about this spot? You’re literally in the heart of Amsterdam City Centre, but it doesn’t feel touristy or overwhelming. The Anne Frank House is just a few minutes’ walk away, and you can easily stroll to the Jordaan district for some of the city’s best brown cafés. I mean, you step out the front door and you’re on one of those postcard-perfect canals with the narrow houses reflected in the water. The tram connections are solid too — though honestly, you’ll probably end up walking everywhere because the neighborhood is just too charming to miss from a tram window.
Your Room Experience
Each room here feels completely unique, which makes sense given the building’s historic layout. The décor (clever name, right?) strikes this perfect balance between classic Dutch elegance and modern comfort. High ceilings, original wooden floors, and these gorgeous canal views from many of the rooms — though fair warning, the stairs are steep and narrow like in most old Amsterdam buildings. The bathrooms are surprisingly spacious for a historic property, and the beds are actually comfortable, not just pretty to look at.
Neighborhood Gems
What really sold me on this place was discovering the little details about the area. There’s this fantastic local café called Café de Reiger just around the corner that most tourists never find — their Dutch apple pie is ridiculous. The Saturday Noordermarkt is within easy walking distance, and if you’re into vintage shopping, the Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) are right there. The hotel staff actually knows these spots too, which is refreshing — they’ll point you toward the good stuff, not just the obvious tourist traps.
Why Guests Love It
The 9.2 rating really makes sense once you’ve stayed here. It’s the kind of place where everything just works without feeling corporate or sterile. The service feels personal — like the staff genuinely wants you to fall in love with Amsterdam the way locals do. Sure, you’re paying a bit more than some chain hotel, but you’re getting this authentic canal house experience that you simply can’t find anywhere else. Plus, the combination of that prime location and the historic character means you’re not just booking a place to sleep — you’re booking a proper Amsterdam experience.

What Our Guests Say
We really enjoyed our stay and would happily stay again. The central location and comfortable bed
What could be improved: Nothing
Clean, comfortable and of a high standard Excellent location, room and bathroom were exceptionally clean and comfortable. I cannot say enough about the manager Jonathan who was very prompt in answering any queries and more than helpful going out of his way to be useful. We had a fantastic week stay. Although our room had no kitchen the rubbish was cleared and washing up done when the room was cleaned daily.
What could be improved: Although we knew about the stairs it would be important that these are taken into consideration.
Beautiful location! Perfect place to stay Beautiful room in the very best location in Amsterdam! We were able to walk to everything we wanted to do during our stay! Museums, parks, amazing food, gorgeous canals, and incredible shopping just steps from this hotel! The room was beautiful and the beds were SO comfy with amazing blackout curtains. We would absolutely stay here again!!
What could be improved: we did not know we could not store our luggage! We used bounce, but many of the places are not open before 11am so it was tough finding a place to store our luggage before check in
Perfect location, clean, comfy and competitivly priced. The location was perfect the house was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed.
What could be improved: Nothing.
I would definitey stay here again! Great apartment in the perfect neighborhood! The apartment was amazing and the Jordaan neighborhood was the perfect location!
What could be improved: Everything was wonderful. Nothing negative to report.
I enjoyed my stay It was properly designed room, comfortable, and cozy. Very good attention for details…
A very pleasant stay, surely recommended. Great location, very clean, the bed is the most comfortable I have ever slept, host is very nice to provide compliments upon arrival. Nice and cozy! Canal view is great and there was a concert on Princengracht during our stay, which we literally listened and watched through our room window! The property is highly recommended.
What could be improved: Stairs are too steep, difficult to carry luggage especially for ladies :)
Excellent stay!! Great location, brilliant apartment. The location was excellent. A big room, furnished really nicely. A lot of extra little touches as well, like a very helpful guidebook, a few complimentary drinks / snack, dressing gowns, hair dryer, iron etc. Everything had been thought of.
Superb ⸻
The house was a typical Dutch home, very beautiful with an old-time vibe, yet renovated as a modern apartment with all the necessary appliances. The maintenance was excellent, and the location was fantastic. We were there during the Pride Parade, which took place entirely on the canal right below our window, and it was a unique experience. Despite the steep Dutch stairs leading up to the apartment from street level, our stay was wonderful and very enjoyable.
Very enjoyable experience Great Location, quaint environment and well furnished
What could be improved: The bed was a little firm for our liking but otherwise perfectly fine
