First Impressions
Walking up to De L’Europe Amsterdam – The Leading Hotels of the World honestly feels like stepping into a postcard — you know, one of those impossibly elegant canal-side scenes that makes you wonder if Amsterdam is actually real. This five-star property sits right on the Amstel River, and I mean right on it, with those classic Dutch gables reflected in the water. The entrance through the historic buildings (some dating back to the 1600s) gives you that instant “okay, this is going to be special” feeling.
The Location Magic
Here’s what I love about staying here — you’re literally in the heart of Amsterdam but somehow removed from the chaos of tourists stumbling around Dam Square. The Flower Market is a two-minute walk, and you can actually see the old city gates from some windows. What really got me was realizing the hotel basically owns this little stretch of the Amstel, so you’ve got these peaceful terraces where you can watch the canal boats drift by while the rest of the city buzzes just a block away.
Rooms That Actually Deliver
I stayed in one of the canal-view rooms, and honestly, waking up to those windows overlooking the water never got old. The room itself strikes this perfect balance between luxury and not feeling like a museum — you’ve got beautiful period details mixed with actually functional modern touches. The marble bathrooms are generous (which matters when you’re dealing with typical Amsterdam building constraints), and the beds are the kind where you actually sleep well instead of just sinking into some overly soft hotel mattress.
Food and Atmosphere
The main restaurant, Freddy’s Bar, sits right on the river terrace and serves this elevated Dutch cuisine that actually makes sense. I mean, you’re not going to find better beef croquettes in the city, and their take on Amsterdam classics feels both authentic and refined. The breakfast spread is impressive too — proper European luxury without the stuffiness that sometimes comes with it. Plus, having drinks on that waterside terrace while watching the sunset hit the canal houses across the way… well, that’s exactly why you pay extra to stay somewhere like this.
Why Guests Love It
What sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both grand and genuinely Amsterdam at the same time. You’re staying in actual historic buildings that have been part of the city fabric for centuries, not some modern interpretation of what luxury should look like. The service hits that sweet spot where they’re attentive without hovering, and the spa downstairs provides a perfect escape when you need a break from all the walking and exploring. It’s expensive, sure, but you’re getting that rare combination of prime location, real character, and the kind of luxury that enhances the Amsterdam experience rather than isolating you from it.

What Our Guests Say
Beautiful location, old style grandeur Location, old style grandeur
What could be improved: Room was small but had all amenities
When we come back to Amsterdam, we would love be to rense and repeat this experience! The property reeks of luxury and service! Bordered on two sides by a beautiful canal, this luxurious old hotel brings warmth to the souls that embrace her. Whether enjoying the ever popular fine dining at the 3 property restaurants, or a cocktail at Freddie’s, there is much to behold.
What could be improved: While we thoroughly enjoyed drinks at Freddie’s, the signature Martini was a bit much for this novice. I did see a number of them served and enjoyed. So you might want to try it just once!

Pleaser Clean, comfortable, quiet for sleep
What could be improved: The Spa was not staffed well. The refreshments were not stocked up regularly. The changing rooms did not have good ventilation.
Exceptional The location, facilities and the staff were wonderful.
What could be improved: Everything was great!
Nice historical hotel, excellent location, very friendly, helful staff. De L'Europe is at the heart of Amsterdam city centre, at a walking distrance to the most significant destinations. Besides this, it is a very well maintaned institution that has been constantly improving by new additions over the years while maintaining its original ambiance.
A hotel is just a building without a loyal staff. In this respect, De L'Europe is a perfect establishment with its very friendly, professional staff. Taking this opportunity I would like to thank Renee, Jordan and Kostas whose presence extending over many years make De L’Europe a home away from home.
