First Impressions
You know what caught me off guard about De Durgerdam, Amsterdam? It’s tucked away in Amsterdam Noord on this quiet dike road where you can actually hear birds chirping instead of trams clattering. I mean, you’re still technically in Amsterdam, but it feels like you’ve stumbled into some secret countryside retreat. The five-star property sits right along the water, and honestly, I had to double-check my booking because it felt too peaceful to be real.
The Setting
Durgerdammerdijk is one of those addresses that locals know but tourists rarely find by accident. The hotel overlooks the IJmeer lake, and from certain spots you can see the old fishing village of Durgerdam — which is basically a handful of historic houses that somehow survived Amsterdam’s urban sprawl. The ferry to get here from Centraal Station actually adds to the charm, though I’ll admit it’s a bit of a journey if you’re planning to hop between museums all day.
The Experience
What strikes me most is how they’ve managed to create this luxury cocoon without feeling stuffy about it. The room I stayed in had floor-to-ceiling windows facing the water, and the design walks this nice line between contemporary and cozy. There’s a spa area that feels intimate rather than overwhelming — sometimes these high-end places try too hard, but here it just works naturally.
Dining and Atmosphere
The restaurant focuses on locally-sourced ingredients, which sounds trendy but actually makes sense when you’re literally surrounded by Dutch countryside. I had dinner there twice and the menu changes based on what’s available — the kind of approach that works when the chef actually knows what they’re doing. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven in Amsterdam proper will appreciate.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the place if you want to stumble out of your hotel and into the Red Light District. But if you’re after that rare combination of luxury and genuine tranquility — while still being connected to the city — De Durgerdam hits a sweet spot that’s honestly hard to find elsewhere in Amsterdam. The 9.5 rating makes sense once you realize they’re not trying to be everything to everyone; they’re just really, really good at being a sophisticated escape.

What Our Guests Say
awesome escape from the city Absolutely magical place! Just 15 minutes from Amsterdam by car, and you're surrounded by calmness, silence, nature, and relaxation. Adorable interior design with meticulous attention to detail. Spotlessly clean rooms and excellent service. Outstanding restaurant for romantic dinner and delicious, tailor-made breakfast cooked by the chef. Beautiful and tasty. Breathtaking views of the harbor. Everything is perfect. We had a lovely weekend!
A perfect weekend break Excellent quiet location and wonderful garden. Superb food.
What could be improved: Too many flies
Little Hidden Gem Everything!!! Stayed for our anniversary. The whole stay was wonderful, staff are fantastic. The restaurant is beautiful, maybe a little more variety, breakfast was super!
Such beautiful rooms, they've done a great job.
We will be back!!
What could be improved: Nothing
Exceptional Amazing location, 10 min drive from the city in a calm and beautiful area. Great food at the restaurant and helpful staff.
Exceptional Just great
Charming and unique location, a fabulous restaurant that also rents rooms. Charming location with quaint cottages and farmland. Beautifully curated decor and comfortable beds. Outstanding restaurant.
What could be improved: This hotel was a splurge for us and we found it overpriced. This is essentially a restaurant which also rents rooms. At these prices we expected more attention as hotel guests. Waiters doubled as hotel staff and were often busy serving meals. How to rent the bikes? Who knew about the walking trails? Would the room phone be answered? The staff were able to add a second chair to the room but why not have two chairs to begin with?
Boutique hotel and dining experience in the quaintest setting! Stunning boutique hotel outside the center of Amsterdam. Perfect for anyone wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Every detail of the restaurant, hotel and property has been considered and is top of the line/beautiful.
Their restaurant de Mark is outstanding. Plan on having at least one dinner there…and the breakfast can’t be beat.
What could be improved: Be sure to rent bikes in advance. You’ll want to bike around the neighborhood and is much faster to bike into central Amsterdam than wait for a car service.
Disappointing, not worth the money See review below.
What could be improved: Disappointing stay, especially at the price point. No thought to customer experience, indifferent staff seemed to assume we would sort ourselves out and know about the facilities, surroundings etc. No apology until we re-raised the issues at the very end of our stay (but didn’t feel it made up for the experience).
Room: On arrival, room was not ready (we were well after check-in time), ended up waiting in the restaurant for over an hour (and wasn’t told when the room was ready). Room ok but temperature control on shower was stuck on hot.
Dinner: clumsy service, food ok. Tables squashed together, wonky table (had to fix myself despite flagging), only got given the bar snacks menu though clearly there for dinner, table not fully laid, tried to order 3 different bottles of wines from the list but none were in stock (Inc one they did by the glass) and was then offered a bottle at c. twice the price of what we had ordered and which was not a similar wine.
Breakfast: Dramatically overpriced eg €28 for a fruit and yoghurt. Laid out like a buffet but then given a different menu (no explanation) Didn’t have orange juice.
Excellent service and delicious food This beautiful hotel was easily accessible with uber, and just a 15 minutes ride from Amsterdam city center. The neighbourhood is adorable and the hotel blends in perfectly with the surroundings! Their eyes for details are impressive, and the staff is super friendly. If you are a food lover, you have to visit Restaurant De Mark in the hotel, which was delicious. Both dinner and breakfast top class. Would highly recommend this hotel, and you will really appreciate the warm and luxurious feeling! Visit!
hidden gem - for now! It truly is your home - a restaurant that feels like your kitchen counter where you hang around with friends and family, a lounge that feels like your comfy couch at home where you lay back and read a book in front of the fire place. The ease and approach by the staff makes it all so much easier to be yourself, get to know each other and settle in. The difference between my home and this place is the quality of wines they have in the wine cellar and the chefs serving stellar dishes, owh and the design of the place! The eye for quality and details is insane and truly comes together setting the perfect setting whether its for day use to relax, quick lunch or, as we did, enjoy a long evening at the bar for diner. I was a little hesitant about the location but my partner convinced me and she was right - by electric bike you are in the city centre within 15min, whilst it takes 15min by taxi. So lets say we found our place to stay when in Amsterdam - as no other hotel or restaurant can beat the views over the water...
