First Impressions

Walking into citizenM Amsterdam South, you’re immediately hit with that sleek, modern vibe that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a tech startup’s dream office. The lobby buzzes with an energy that’s distinctly un-hotel-like — there are people working on laptops, groups chatting over coffee, and this general sense that something interesting is happening. It’s a four-star property, but honestly, it doesn’t feel stuffy or overly formal like some places in that category.

Smart Design Everywhere

The room is where citizenM really shows off. Everything is controlled through a tablet — lights, temperature, TV, even the blinds. I’ll admit, it took me a few minutes to figure out how to dim the lights for sleep, but once you get it, it’s pretty cool. The bed is genuinely comfortable (they call it their “big ass bed,” which made me chuckle), and the rain shower is one of those experiences that makes you not want to leave. The space feels bigger than it actually is, thanks to clever design and a wall-to-wall window.

Location That Actually Works

You’re in the Zuideramstel area, which isn’t exactly the tourist center of Amsterdam, but that’s actually a good thing. It’s about a 10-minute tram ride to the city center, and the tram stop is literally right outside. What I really appreciated was having the Zuidas business district nearby — there are some excellent cafes and restaurants that locals frequent, without the tourist markup you get in Dam Square.

Social Spaces Done Right

The communal areas are where this place really shines. The lobby seamlessly flows into a bar and lounge area that doesn’t feel forced or artificial. I found myself hanging out there more than I expected, partly because the coffee is legitimately good and partly because the atmosphere just works. There’s also a 24-hour canteen concept where you can grab decent food any time, which saved me when I arrived late and everything else was closed.

Why Guests Love It

This isn’t your typical Amsterdam hotel experience, and I mean that in the best way. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy working there — they’re helpful without being overly eager, and they know the neighborhood well enough to give you real recommendations. The whole place feels designed for people who travel regularly and appreciate efficiency without sacrificing comfort. Plus, the parking situation is refreshingly straightforward if you’re driving, which can’t be said for most places in Amsterdam.
