First Impressions
Walking up to Canal Hideaway on Herengracht, you’d honestly be forgiven for walking right past it. This three-star boutique spot doesn’t scream for attention — it whispers elegantly from behind one of those classic Amsterdam canal house facades that actually dates back to the 17th century. I mean, the building itself is part of the UNESCO World Heritage area, so you’re literally staying inside a piece of history here.
Location & Getting Around
The thing about staying right on Herengracht is that you’re in the heart of Amsterdam’s historic center, but it’s surprisingly peaceful. Sure, you’ve got the tourist buzz a few streets over, but this stretch feels more like where locals actually live and work. The tram stops are maybe a three-minute walk, and honestly, you can reach most of Amsterdam’s main attractions on foot from here — though you’ll want to rent a bike because, well, it’s Amsterdam.
The Rooms
Here’s what surprised me about my room — they’ve managed to blend modern comfort with the building’s original character without making it feel forced. The ceilings are higher than you’d expect, and if you get one of the canal-facing rooms, those tall windows frame the water perfectly. The kitchenette setup is actually practical too, not just decorative — decent-sized fridge, proper coffee maker, enough counter space to prepare simple meals if you want to save some euros.
Neighborhood Feel
What I really appreciate is how this part of Herengracht feels authentic rather than touristy. There’s this great little café called Café de Reiger just around the corner where you’ll see more locals than visitors, and the morning light hitting the canal from your window — it’s the kind of scene that makes you understand why people fall in love with this city. You know what’s nice? The evening walks along the canal when the houseboats are all lit up and everything feels a bit magical without being overly crowded.
Why Guests Love It
Canal Hideaway works because it gets the balance right between location and value. You’re paying for a prime spot in Amsterdam’s most photogenic neighborhood, but you’re not getting gouged like you would at some of the flashier hotels nearby. The staff actually knows the area — they’ll point you toward the good stroopwafel place (not the tourist trap ones) and help you figure out the tram system. Plus, with that 9.0 rating, it’s clear other travelers appreciate the same things I noticed — it’s comfortable, well-located, and feels more like staying in a local’s guest room than a generic hotel chain.

Superb We loved our stay here! Perfect location, amazing, lovely and super helpful host! You don’t feel how small the room is at all. Very clean and tidy, we just had to get used to using smaller size towels but this wasn’t an issue at all. I would recommend this room to everyone!
Exceptional Central, great little room that’s bigger than it looks, owner met us and gave us tips for the area
What could be improved: Nothing

David is a fabulous host who welcomed us at the property and was always available if we needed anything. The room was comfortable with a beautiful outlook. Would recommend staying here.
