First Impressions
Boutique Hotel The Craftsmen sits right on Singel canal, and honestly, the location hit me before I even walked through the door. You’re looking at one of those classic Amsterdam canal houses β narrow, tall, with that unmistakable Dutch charm that makes you slow down and actually notice the architecture. The building itself feels like it’s been part of the neighborhood forever, which it probably has.
Location & Neighborhood
Being in Amsterdam City Centre means you’re basically in the heart of everything, but Singel is one of the quieter canals β you get the authenticity without the constant tourist crowds that hit Prinsengracht. I mean, you can walk to Dam Square in about five minutes, but you’re also close enough to the Jordaan that you feel like you’re staying somewhere locals would actually choose. The canal-side cafΓ©s right outside are perfect for morning coffee, and there’s something about watching the bikes go by that never gets old.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had this perfect balance of old Amsterdam character and modern comfort β exposed beams overhead but a rainfall shower that actually worked properly. What struck me most was how they managed to make a relatively compact space feel thoughtful rather than cramped. The windows opened right onto the canal, and you know what? That view of the water and the houseboats makes up for any space constraints you might notice.
Dining & Atmosphere
The hotel’s restaurant downstairs has this cozy, almost living-room feel that works perfectly for the building’s scale. Breakfast was local and fresh β proper Dutch cheese, good bread, coffee that didn’t taste like it came from a machine. What I appreciated was that they didn’t try to be overly fancy; it felt authentic to the neighborhood. The staff seemed to know the area well too, giving recommendations that actually made sense for someone staying a few days.
Why Guests Love It
This four-star property gets the balance right between boutique character and practical comfort. You’re staying somewhere that feels distinctly Amsterdam β not just any European city β but with amenities that work for modern travelers. The 9.3 rating makes sense when you experience how the hotel fits into its surroundings rather than fighting against them. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to explore the neighborhood on foot, which is exactly what you should be doing in Amsterdam anyway.

What could be improved: Nothing to dislike, was perfect ππ»
Great location, funky decor, a lovely breakfast and helpful staff Really creative decor, with friendly and helpful staff
What could be improved: Narrow staircase but thankfully there was a lift
Cozy, personable, unique hotel on the canal that could stay at forever! Service was truly magical! The hotel team called me prior to arrival to confirm time, helped me to my room with luggage, and reserved a car to the airport for me. Room was small (expected) but thoughtfully laid out (definitely only room for one in the Instrument Room!) and overlooking the canal. Loads of bars, cafes, restaurants in walking distance. Breakfast was truly the best I've ever had - from the choice of breads to the spread ready for me at the table so that I could eat prior to early flight! I can't say enough about the quality and variety as well as the cute breakfast room! And the gift of gorgeous coasters of the hotel (blue & white porcelain!) were the icing on the cake!

This is an absolutely gorgeous hotel, you could not be better looked after for your time in Amsterdam. Iβd go back in a Perfect hotel, I loved every thing about it.
The perfect Amsterdam hideaway! Just a couple of blocks from Central Station yet wonderfully peaceful, The Craftsmen combines history and comfort in a beautifully restored 1652 building. Solo travellers will love the smaller, budget-friendly rooms: compact but with everything you need. Breakfast is outstandingβtop-quality classics plus fresh fruit, berries and muesli. The young staff embody true hospitality: genuinely helpful and effortlessly professional.

wonderful The staff were great, breakfast was amazing. I stayed in the tiny single room but it was very cosy and didn't feel too small. Everything in the room was of very high standard. Location was very central.
What could be improved: It was a little noisy outside at night, but given the central location that would be hard to avoid in any hotel.
Exceptional This hotel really takes care of the entire guest journey - from a surprise bottle of wine in the room to gift at the end of the stay. Room was very clean and designed with lots of craftsman spirit. Breakfast was good overlooking the channel. I would definitely recommend it.
Fantastic unique hotel but check the rooms before you book Really great hotel that is more about form than function. Its location is great, itβs quirky, the staff are super friendly. We very much enjoyed our stay.
What could be improved: The problem for us was the heat in The Brewer basement room. Sadly the room is not air conditioned and also does not have a window that you can open. This made the room very warm and once we had both had showers in the morning, it was like a sauna!
The hotel provide a Dyson fan but it was still very warm.
