First Impressions

You know what caught me off guard about Botel? It’s literally a floating hotel — and I mean that in the best possible way. Moored at NDSM-Pier 3 in Amsterdam Noord, this three-star converted cargo ship feels like something you’d stumble upon in a quirky indie film. The whole concept sounds gimmicky until you actually step aboard and realize they’ve pulled it off.

The Floating Experience

Here’s the thing about sleeping on water — you’ll feel the gentle rocking motion, especially if you get a room on the lower deck. Some people love it, others need a night to adjust, but honestly, I found it oddly soothing after the first hour. The ship’s industrial design hasn’t been completely polished away, which actually works in its favor. Those thick porthole windows and metal corridors remind you you’re somewhere genuinely different, not just another cookie-cutter hotel.

Amsterdam Noord Adventure

NDSM is this fascinating post-industrial area that most tourists never see — former shipyard turned creative hub with street art, quirky cafes, and an authentic Amsterdam vibe that’s disappeared from the city center. The free ferry from Central Station takes about fifteen minutes, and you’ll ride alongside locals heading to work rather than clusters of tour groups. I actually ended up exploring Noord more than I planned because the area has this laid-back energy that’s hard to find elsewhere in Amsterdam.

Practical Realities

The rooms are compact — think efficient rather than cramped — with everything you need but nothing extra. The ship’s restaurant serves decent food, though you’ll want to venture out for dinner since Noord has some surprisingly good spots within walking distance. What impressed me most was how quiet it gets at night despite being on water; the sound insulation is better than you’d expect from a converted cargo vessel.

Why Guests Love It

Look, Botel isn’t trying to be the Ritz — it’s offering something completely different for travelers who want more than just a place to crash. The novelty factor is real, but it doesn’t rely on gimmicks to work. You’re getting solid accommodations, a unique experience, and access to a part of Amsterdam that feels authentic rather than touristy. Plus, that 7.8 rating reflects what I experienced: a well-executed concept that delivers on its promise without overselling itself.

Superb We stayed in the letter B, we enjoyed everything about it! It was clean, it was very very comfortable, and easily accessible due to the free regular ferry! The skateboards were a cool extra, we just used it as base mainly as we were out alot but was great and would stay again!

What could be improved: The only negatives I could think of is they provided tea and coffee etc but no milk but we could have easily got some if we was planning to be back there for a longer period than we was.
And it said there was a games console and TV on middle floor but that wasn't there when we was there, however that didn't affect us in any way as we wasn't there for that!
We lived absolutely everything

Very, very, very enjoyable Loved the room we stayed in (The O) and my Wife and I had a very, very good time there for my birthday

What could be improved: First staff member we interacted with was stand offish and a bit rude but other staff members made up for it. The room could of done with a lick of paint

Sleepless but wonderful. The staff where very friendly. All of them. Full of smiles and happy to see us. The duvets were lovely and thick. The windows opening fully was an absolute bonus. A decent drink section in the bar downstairs with tables that have charger ports in them. That was fantastic.

What could be improved: The bunk beds are honestly horrible to sleep on. If your on bottom bunk you can’t sit up as it is too close to the top bunk. Only one pillow was horrible to sleep with. No kettle or any form of drink making things. The vending machine is really overpriced. The buffet breakfast didn’t have enough choice and the bacon was extremely fatty and greasy.
