First Impressions
You know what caught me off guard about Authentic Farmhouse – De Vergulden Eenhoorn? Finding an actual farmhouse tucked away in Amsterdam’s Oost district — I mean, this isn’t exactly what you’d expect in the Netherlands’ busiest city. The building has this weathered charm that immediately tells you it’s been around for generations, with traditional Dutch architecture that feels genuinely lived-in rather than museum-perfect.
The Neighborhood Experience
Honestly, staying in Amsterdam without being right in the tourist chaos was refreshing. The Oost area gives you that authentic local vibe — you’ll find neighborhood cafés where locals actually hang out, and the morning bike commute along Ringdijk feels like you’re part of the city’s daily rhythm. It’s maybe a 15-minute bike ride to Dam Square, but worlds away from the crowds and noise that can honestly get exhausting after a few days.
The Room
The room I stayed in had these lovely exposed wooden beams and windows that actually opened wide — something you don’t always get in city hotels. The furnishings strike that perfect balance between rustic farmhouse charm and modern comfort, though I’ll be honest, the floorboards do creak a bit when you walk around at night. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious for a historic building, and the water pressure was better than I expected.
What Makes It Special
This four-star place really nails the “authentic” part of its name. During breakfast, the owner told me stories about the building’s history — apparently it’s been in the same family for decades, and they’ve carefully preserved original details while adding modern touches. There’s a small garden out back where they grow herbs for the restaurant, and in the evenings, you can sit there with a drink and almost forget you’re in a major European capital.
Why Guests Love It
The 8.8 rating makes complete sense once you experience the personal attention here. The staff — well, they’re more like hosts really — remember your name and actually care about making your stay memorable. Parking is available on-site, which is honestly a godsend in Amsterdam where finding a spot can be a nightmare. Plus, you’re getting that rare combination of historical character and genuine Dutch hospitality that’s become harder to find as the city gets more touristy.

What Our Guests Say
A Unique stay in Central Amsterdam that feels like a visit to a farm! Location, and the independence with how the hotel was managed - Deene was excellent and attended to any needs we had!
What could be improved: Nothing
Very good A spacious suite, beds were comfy, nice and quite location

What could be improved: The ac could work a little better
Exceptional Location to the city and the property itself with the gardens and proximity to a great restaurant
Traditional comfortable farm house stay in a lovely leafy location. Gorgeous traditional farm house perfect for a family of four. Deene was great with the communication and assisted us with our queries. Comfortable bed. Would recommend!
Incredible authentic Amsterdam stay The word authentic is in the name of the hotel, and that is exactly what you get. Our room was incredible, featuring an upstairs with extra beds and a basement bathroom with an amazing tub. We had a great time. The hotel was easy to reach and they were super helpful in accommodating my requests related to my wedding.
The location is great, away from the city centre so you can experience the "real" Amsterdam. But still only a short stroll and a tram ride from all major sightseeing locations.
What could be improved: Cleaning could have a little bit more attention to detail, nothing major.
Great place - great location The location is great. Very close to the Amstel station and away from all touristic center.
Big and cosy. Very nice architecture.
What could be improved: It needs a little coffee table.
Its beautiful, clean, perfect holiday home, hidden away in a haven surrounded by flowering gardens, a canal and just a s It was very comfortable and the rooms felt private even without doors dividing them. The facilities were all good quality. And we had added helpful items such as the steamer and mini fridge. The interiors were beautiful and very tasteful. The location was also incredible, surrounded by beautiful gardens, next to a gorgeous restaurant and hidden away from busy roads or towns but still close to transport, shops and cafes that you can walk to along a beautiful, peaceful canal
What could be improved: We needed more mirrors inside. A perfect place for a long/large one would be on the wall space on the right hand side of the bed, next to sockets. A blind is needed on the upstairs window. Id also suggest adding to the rules/guide a time in the morning from when it’s more acceptable for noise to start.
