First Impressions

The Amsterdam House of Arts & Crafts sits on a quiet cobblestone street in the heart of the old Jewish Quarter, and honestly, you might walk right past it if you’re not paying attention. It’s housed in what looks like a traditional Amsterdam townhouse — tall, narrow, with those classic Dutch windows that let in tons of natural light. The facade is understated, but once you step inside, you realize this three-star place has something special going on.

Location & Neighborhood

Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat is one of those streets locals actually use, which I love. You’re a five-minute walk from Waterlooplein market and the Jewish Historical Museum, but it doesn’t feel touristy at all. There’s a great little Indonesian restaurant two doors down that hardly anyone knows about, and the whole area has this authentic Amsterdam vibe — bikes everywhere, locals chatting on stoops, the works. The trams are close enough when you need them, but far enough away that you won’t hear them at night.

The Rooms

My room was on the third floor (no elevator, just so you know), and it felt like staying in someone’s beautifully curated home rather than a hotel. The arts and crafts theme isn’t some gimmicky thing — they’ve actually got local artwork on the walls and handmade furniture that feels substantial and warm. The bed was surprisingly comfortable for a place this price, and the bathroom, while compact, had been updated with good water pressure and modern fixtures.

The Details That Matter

What really struck me was how much thought went into the small stuff. The floors are original hardwood that creaks just enough to remind you you’re in a historic building, but not so much that it’s annoying. Each floor has a little seating area with books about Amsterdam’s history, and the staff — there’s usually just one person at the front desk — actually knows the neighborhood well enough to give you proper recommendations, not just the usual tourist spots.

Why Guests Love It

Look, this isn’t going to be the fanciest place you’ve ever stayed, but it’s got character in spades and feels genuinely Amsterdam. The price point is fair for what you get, especially considering you’re in the city center but away from the chaos of Dam Square. I mean, you can walk to the Red Light District in ten minutes if that’s your thing, but you can also head the other direction toward the quiet canals and feel like you’ve discovered a secret part of the city. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to hang out in your room for a bit before heading out for the day.

Excellent place to stay in Amsterdam, giving good value, great accommodation & location Our host was great, friendly & helpful, & gave us a lovely breakfast! We loved the vintage room decoration, & enjoyed the space we had, plus good bathroom facilities.
The area was quiet so good to relax after exploring the city, close to lots of places we wanted to visit so we could walk everywhere, & only 15 mins from the central station.

What could be improved: N/A

Great location yes I would stay again. Great location
Amazing breakfast

What could be improved: Check in process was a bit confusing. No one answered when we knocked. It would have been helpful to have buzzer at the door.

Very nice B&B in a great location - great location, close to the center, but in a quiet side street
- friendly and helpful host
- spacious room and bathroom
- comfortable large double bed
- very nice breakfast
- tea kettle in the room (the tea bags provided were not so great, but since Chinatown is close by, it is easy to get wonderful tea)

What could be improved: - the room is wonderful, but there is no cupboard (just a few clothes hangers to hang onto the bathroom door), and since it is directly to the side walk, there are permanent curtains in front of the window (one can see the sky through the upper part of the window, though)

Unassuming but remarkably comfortable. Very good value. A marvellous host, unobtrusive but always ready to help. The room was spacious and very clean, had a small private sauna, a dinner table and a little kitchen. Breakfast is brought to the room at the time of your choice—and it was excellent: anything you could wish for, was there.
The neighbourhood is extremely quiet. On the other hand, it also means there is nothing much around it in terms of cafés or the like. Still, the hotel is just a couple of minutes on foot from the busier streets, so you actually have the best of both worlds.

Good value Great breakfast & location

What could be improved: Host didn't provide any initial instructions on how to use shower or TV, & seemed disorganised. But overall it was a good place once I worked how to operate things.

Exceptional Everything was fantastic - walking distance to lots of sights and restaurants, spacious room, the sauna was fantastic, and a big tray of assorted breakfast goodies. If ever in Amsterdam again, we would definitely book the same place.
