When I first spotted Amsterdam Canal Guest Apartment on Zwanenburgwal, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from a four-star apartment rental. The building sits right along one of Amsterdam’s quieter canals, and you know what struck me immediately? The lack of tourist crowds — this isn’t the Jordaan or near the Red Light District, so you get that authentic canal-side living without feeling like you’re in a theme park.
Location & Neighborhood
Zwanenburgwal is actually one of those canals locals use as a shortcut, which means you’re perfectly positioned without being in the thick of things. I could walk to the Flower Market in about eight minutes, and the Rembrandtplein area was maybe ten minutes on foot. The nearest tram stop (Waterlooplein) is close enough that getting around the city was never an issue — though honestly, I found myself walking most places because the neighborhood itself is just pleasant to wander through.
The Space
The room setup surprised me in the best way possible. This isn’t your typical hotel experience — you get an actual apartment with a proper kitchen that I actually used (rare for me when traveling). The windows face the canal, and I mean, waking up to that view never got old. The space feels authentically Dutch without being overly themed, if that makes sense — like someone’s well-appointed city apartment rather than a tourist accommodation.
Practical Details
Here’s something I appreciated: the host was incredibly responsive, but not in that overwhelming way where they’re constantly checking in. Check-in was smooth, and they provided actual useful local recommendations — not just the obvious tourist spots. The Wi-Fi worked perfectly (tested it thoroughly since I was working remotely for part of my stay), and the shower had excellent water pressure, which you can’t always count on in these old canal houses.

Look, with a 9.5 rating, this place clearly works for people, and after staying there, I get why. It’s that sweet spot between hotel convenience and apartment authenticity — you’re living like a local but without having to figure out complicated key exchanges or deal with unresponsive hosts. The apartment had great supplies such as coffee for machines, toiletries.
What could be improved: Owner is very careful to point out that this is an apartment, with no cooking facilities (microwave to heat food only) and steep steps down to the entrance.
It could be improved with a small seating area (have to watch tv lying on bed); tv could be on a higher stand and handrail for entrance steps. But overall these are small things and price reflects the facilities.
Perfect stay in Amsterdam! The location could not have been better. Right on the canal and less than a five minute walk to the nearest metro, from which you could travel to anywhere in the city. The apartment itself was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The lady who greeted us was very helpful and welcoming, and Guido was an excellent host. Highly recommend!

Information provided by the host was excellent. Made finding places easy. Very central location. There was no breakfast, but we were aware of that prior to booking. It was a self-contained apartment. Central to the Museum District. Easy to get around.

Perfect spot to enjoy both the touristy and quiet sides of Amsterdam. we truly loved how quiet the neighborhood is. it was also close to everything.

You will have to book well in advance to secure a stay here. Location, location, location. Also very clean unit, comfortable bed, and good coffee.
Great apartment and host Close to everything. 30 minute walk or less by tram/metro/train to Central, Rijks, anywhere "center city". Clean apartment with everything a couple needs. Close to Albert Heijne store to buy groceries.
What could be improved: Loved everything. Even the entry steps weren't as bad as I thought they might be.
Stunning central apartment with fantastic host! Location was exceptional, Lovely bench over looking the Amstel river right at your door step! Host was Absolutely brilliant and gave us an extensive guide on the local area. Apartment had anything you could think of needing as well as a bottle of wine left for us in the fridge! Will definitely be booking again when we return to Amsterdam!

What could be improved: The stairs are rather steep. Carting a suitcase up and down was not easy, thankfully there’s only a few.
Stay here The location is amazing, 5 mins walk to Rembrandtpl or Waterloopl, metro, tram, supermarkets and bars, cafes and shops on the streets nearby. Facing the Amstel, the apartment is located in an island of tranquility overlooking the hussle and bussle of the city. You are in the heart of the city but away but away from the crazyness, you can take a coffee to the bench and watch the city wake in the morning. You can walk almost everywhere in the city centre in 20-30 mins.
The apartment is perfectly sized, spacious for this city, with quality furnishings and all the amenities you will need for week's stay. the bed is comfy, plenty of space to unpack your things and a small kitchenette to prepare meals. There isn't a stove due to fire regs, but I was still able to eat many meals in the apartment. Tastefully designed with a view into the river. The apartment is impeccably clean and organised, it makes staying here really easy.
The host, Guido, was professional, friendly and flexible in his communication, you can feel the pride he has in his apartment and his joy in enabling visitors to experiance a slice of it. Guido lives upstairs and was available to welcome me and to say goodbye, we had a great chat and he was meticulous in explaining how to get the best out of my stay. Otherwise I didn't see Guido, so I still had my privacy and independence.
I consider myself lucky to have found this place and to have stayed there. I have stayed in many hotels and apartments in Amsterdam, and I would definitely stay here again if it was available. If it is available for your dates, I advise you to book it before it goes.
What could be improved: I bought a 5 days travel pass, but the location is so good I hardly used it.
