First Impressions
Walking up to Ambassade Hotel on Herengracht feels like stepping into one of those Amsterdam postcards — except better, because you’re actually there. The hotel occupies ten 17th-century canal houses all strung together, and honestly, from the outside you’d never guess where one building ends and another begins. I mean, the whole facade just flows along the canal like it was always meant to be one grand hotel, even though these buildings have probably seen more history than most museums.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what’s great about staying right in Amsterdam City Centre? Everything’s walkable, but you’re not stuck in tourist chaos 24/7. The Herengracht canal is actually one of the quieter stretches — still central, but you can sleep without hearing drunk groups stumbling home at 3 AM. The Anne Frank House is literally a few minutes’ walk, and if you head toward Leidseplein, you’ll hit all the cafés and restaurants without needing to figure out the tram system (though honestly, Amsterdam’s trams are pretty straightforward).
The Rooms
Here’s the thing about staying in a historic canal house — every room feels different because, well, they basically are. Some have those classic canal views that’ll make your Instagram followers hate you, others look out over the courtyard. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re thoughtfully designed with a mix of modern comfort and period details that actually work together. I stayed in one with original wooden beams, and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious for a building this old.
Dining & Amenities
The hotel’s restaurant, Keizersgracht 384, sits in what used to be the library — and they’ve kept some of the old bookshelves, which creates this cozy, literary atmosphere that feels very Amsterdam. Breakfast is solid (think fresh bread, local cheeses, and coffee that’ll actually wake you up), but the real winner is having dinner there when you’re too tired to venture out. The menu focuses on Dutch ingredients with a modern twist, and the wine list shows someone actually knows what they’re doing.
Why Guests Love It
This four-star property hits that sweet spot between historic charm and modern functionality that’s surprisingly hard to find in Amsterdam. The staff seems to genuinely care about making your stay work — they’ll give you actual neighborhood recommendations, not just the tourist traps. Plus, there’s something special about staying in a building that’s been hosting travelers for decades, where the creaky floors and narrow staircases feel like part of the experience rather than inconveniences. With a 9.2 rating, it’s clear other guests feel the same way about this place.

What Our Guests Say
Superb It’s pricey to stay in a nice location in Amsterdam, but this is a terrific hotel. Comfortable rooms. Nice restaurants and bar. Nice views. Easy access to everything.
Best canal views and best Amsterdam neighborhood Beautiful canal views, really tasty and healthy breakfast overlooking the canals, the room layout and the art gallery around the hotel. The library bar was nicely done as well.
One exceptional attention to detail was the availability of stamps and postal from the front desk
What could be improved: Space around the bed and furniture was a bit tight.
Superb The staff are incredibly warm and attentive and it always feels like I’m arriving back home.

Elegant and well located Location, style, friendliness
A delightful surprise - the Ambassade is an elegant hotel with a top notch staff and beautiful facilities in one of the Beautiful and clean in the best neighborhood overlooking a canal
Perfect for short stay in Amsterdam Amazing canal views and location can't be beat. Easy walks to all the main sites or grab a tram to get further afield. Bit of a maze to get to the room but well worth all the little steps. The two story Grand Suite is simply lovely (even tho the staircase can be a little tricky). King bed is the largest I've ever seen in a hotel! Library bar is charming and the drinks were yummy.
What could be improved: No views from the Grand Suite bedroom. Bedroom felt a little like a cavern because unable to open shades; windows from other rooms are right there! Warm day heated the rooftop room so it took a while to cool down. Shower in bathroom is very, very small but functional. Breakfast is pricy for a pretty small buffet so I think they expect you to order off the menu. Wait staff does not like to be rushed when asking for the bill.
Lovely hotel, well appointed rooms, convenient location & friendly staff Very friendly and helpful staff. We had a triple room which was a king bed and a single room with a door. Plenty of room and privacy for 3 people. The room paid homage to the traditional architecture of a canal row house and was very comfortable. The location was convenient so it was very easy to walk around. Our only regret is that we didn't get to stay longer!
